First sent to the states in 1972, the Amendment stated that "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex". The Amendment had only received 35 of the necessary 38 state ratifications. In 1982, by the time she was 42 years old, on June 30th, time ran out on the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). Running against incumbent Gerald Ford, he won 50.1% of the popular vote to Ford's 48.0%. In 1977, by the time she was 37 years old, on January 20th, Jimmy Carter became the 39th President of the United States. The Amendment was both a reaction to the 4 term Roosevelt presidency and also the recognition of a long-standing tradition in American politics. In 1951, when she was only 11 years old, on February 27th, the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution (which limited the number of terms a president may serve to two) was ratified by 36 states, making it a part of the U.S.
Roosevelt defeated Willkie in the popular vote by 54.7 to 44.8% and in the Electoral College 449 to 82. was emerging from the Great Recession and he promised that he would not involve the country in any foreign war (which of course changed when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor). Roosevelt running for a third term was controversial. In 1940, in the year that Nancy Jane Stockmaster was born, on November 5th, President Franklin Roosevelt was elected to a third term, defeating Wendell Willkie of Indiana (a corporate lawyer).
